“Joe’s Project” : New helpline for loved ones of suicide victims June 28, 2007

The Suffolk County Medical Examiner reported that between 1997 and 2006,  an average of two Suffolk County residents a week committed suicide.   Suffolk County has funded a new program - Joe’s Project - to assist the loved ones of suicide victims.  The Family Service League and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention manage the program.   Trained volunteers can be reached at 516-869-4215.  They provide help for suicide survivors and information on family counseling, survivor support groups and community education.

Before you begin digging in your yard for any reason…building a deck, planting a tree,  it is recommended by Common Ground Alliance (CGA)  that you call 811.  CGA is an association which works  “with all industry stakeholders in an effort to prevent damage to underground utility infrastructure and ensure public safety and environmental protection.”   By calling 811, you can have your utility lines marked (FOR FREE)  before you begin to dig.  Visit their website to find out how 811 works and when to call:  http://www.call811.com

Here’s a website for you:  http://www.cranky.com  It describes itself as “the first age-relevant search engine”  and is aimed at those over 50.  Besides its very own search engine (EONS),  it includes features on special topics including PEOPLE, FUN, MONEY, BODY, OBITS, TRAVEL.  You can sign up for Eons Brain Builders which are free online games which increase you brain power.  You can also create a LifeMap and record your life story online which can be shared with friends and family ONLY or with the whole world!

Come and join the Sudoko wave! “Sudoko” the game everyone is trying is coming to the Library 4:00pm on Thursday June 14th.  Come and learn some interesting ways to become better at the game. It will also be a great opportunity to meet some fellow sudoko lovers. Hope to see you there!

The place to be Saturday June 9th at 5:00pm is John Jermain Memorial Library for the much anticipated publication party for “Voices of Sag Harbor: A Village Remembered” Here is your chance to feel the “old” Sag Harbor that so many of the born and raised Sag Harborites speak of.  You can read these wonderful accounts and decide for yourself whether the “old” Sag Harbor is still alive and well or past and gone. A must read for anyone interested in a village that balances being both historic and modern.

Did you know that over 35 million Americans are food insecure, hungry or at risk of hunger?   Please remember those who need your help right here in Sag Harbor by donating to the Sag Harbor Community Food Pantry located at the First Presbyterian Church/Old Whaler’s Church (Union Street.)  Food donations are accepted on an ongoing basis at the Church as well as various locations in town and at the Library.   Volunteers pick up donations regularly from the Library’s food bin located on the ground floor of the Library.  To learn more about hunger in America go to http://www.hungerday.org
