In case you haven’t already noticed, there’s now a second Google search box on the JJML home page. The new search box is actually for Google Book Search. This allows you to search the full text of books to find books that interest you. You can also find out where to buy or borrow them. We’re very excited about this new addition to our website and hope you find it useful. Let us know if it’s a good addition by leaving a comment here in the blog.

The trustees and staff of the John Jermain Memorial Library thank the voters of the Sag Harbor School District for approving the Library’s 2007 operating budget by the substantial margin of 292 to 119. We are gratified that you appreciate the library’s value to the Sag Harbor community and support the programs we offer.

Also in last Tuesday’s vote, incumbent Trustees Diane Gaites and Deborah Wilson were reelected for another term. They will be joined on the board by newly elected trustee Chris Leonard, who will replace retiring Vice-President of the Board, Gayle Ratcliffe. We congratulate all the elected trustees.

Finally, we would like to offer a deeply felt thank you to Gayle Ratcliffe for her many years of service to the John Jermain Memorial Library, and to the library users of the Sag Harbor School District.

Today is the day to vote on the Library’s annual operating budget. This has nothing to do with any possible expansion, or relocation of the library…it is only a vote on the amount of money the library needs to run its current operation.

In addition, voters will be able to choose three library trustees from among the seven candidates running for those positions.

Voting, which started at 8:00 a.m. this morning is on the ground floor of the library. It will continue until 9:00 p.m. tonight. Don’t forget to vote!

Save the date: October 14th is when the Library will hold its first One for the Books dinner party extravaganza, in homes all over the Sag Harbor area, in order to raise money for the restoration of JJML’s beautiful turn-of-the-(20th)century home. Each dinner-party host has picked a book – there’s something for everyone, from Carl Hiassen to Julia Child to Proust. There’s maritime adventure, featuring Patrick O’Brian’s Master & Commander, a taste of The Godfather for Mario Puzo fans, and fine Tuscan cooking for lovers of the book Under the Tuscan Sun. Many local authors’ books – E.L. Doctorow, Alan Furst, Maryann Calendrille & Kathryn Szoka – are featured as well, and lots of Sag Harbor history too. One special dinner, featuring Dashiell Hammett’s The Thin Man, will be held the following Saturday night, October 21

One for the Books works like this: Guests sign up for dinner by picking a book. Some dinners are family style, some served by uniformed butler, and some are buffet: part of the fun is that you won’t know beforehand. Neither hosts nor guests will know who’s coming to dinner until just days before the event! It will be a great way to meet some neighbors, celebrate books (and, no, you don’t have to read the book you’ve picked if you don’t want to) and raise money specifically for the renovation and preservation of the John Jermain Memorial building on Main Street.

Invitations will be available at the Library’s circulation desk beginning the week of August 21st and up until September 18th. Seating is very limited for these dinners, so sign up early. The suggested donation is $100 per ticket, of which $80 is tax-deductible. Questions? Please call the library or e-mail Susan Merrell at smerrell [at] optonline [dot] net
